Greater Cleveland Congregations Update

FPC is one of the founding congregations of this organization. The GCC began in 2011, as multiple faith communities came together with a focus of social justice. The GCC work is member driven. In 2020 the GCC accomplishments included: the creation of a long-needed, off-site, pre-booking mental health and addiction crisis diversion center; providing free onsite COVID testing in partnership with the Cuyahoga County Board of Health and MetroHealth System; and GCC’s Battle for Democracy Initiative to ensure that tens of thousands of voters were made aware that their ballot applications had been rejected so they could correct them. As a result of their work, 7,000 applications were corrected! GCC also acknowledged the work of its partners, NOVA, and the League of Women Voters, in accomplishing this feat. The GCC Cleveland Heights task force committee has had a major impact on local housing by successfully working with the City to identify homes in need of major repair and holding absentee landlords accountable, e,g,, by establishing foreclosure bonds. GCC is in the process of setting new goals for 2023.

GCC University
GCC has seen amazing growth in the number of leaders involved in our issue campaigns. In light of this growth, we will be focusing in 2023 on creating a training foundation to support our new energy so that we are all rooted and grounded in the way that GCC organizes and creates change in our communities.

GCC University is a three-session training on key concepts and critical components essential to GCC’s mission of building power for social justice in Greater Cleveland. All core team members should consider enrolling.

GCC U will include training, role-playing, discussion and case studies on:

Building Power: Initiating and developing public relationships through one-to-one relational meetings, developing leadership skills and creating analyses to understand power.
Action Team Training: Strategic decision-making and how to cut problems into winnable issues.
Core Team and Delegate Development: Creating a culture of organizing in your own institution and understanding the qualities and responsibilities of a GCC leader.

GCC U will be held on the following consecutive Sundays:
February 26, 2023  3-7pm
March 5, 2023  3-7pm
March 12, 2023  3-7pm

All sessions will be held at Fairmount Presbyterian Church, 2757 Fairmount Boulevard in Cleveland Heights.

Training is free for GCC leaders. Here is a flyer. Light dinner will be provided during each training.

Attendance at all three training sessions is required for participation.
