You Are Here
We try to be in two places at once all the time. Our bodies are here, while our thoughts and our feelings wander someplace else. But instead of then being in two places at once, the reality is that we end up present in no place at all. This year at Fairmount, we’re going to learn to be where we are. To be fully present here–mind, body, and spirit–wherever we find ourselves. Watch this introductory video to learn more about this year’s spiritual focus.
This year at Fairmount, we’ll keep practicing presence, but in a new way. This year we ask: Where are we? We’ll take a deep dive into the importance of place – of being fully present wherever we find ourselves. We’ll begin with the history of this place (Fairmount, Cleveland Heights, Northeast Ohio, etc.) and consider what it means to belong in this place. We’ll ask where we find God here, and how we relate to others who share this place with us. Our hypothesis is this: if we can learn to become more fully present here, then we will find belonging, purpose and a deep joy that no one can take away from us.
It seems like a simple question. But it could be a little more complicated than you think. Is it possible to be in a place without being fully present there?
In the fall of 2022, we launched a yearlong spiritual focus: Now Here This. We explored and practiced how to become more present–to God, to each other, and to our community. And what we experienced is that practicing presence can lead to profound spiritual transformation…and that becoming more present is really hard to do. We gave some real thought to what makes being present so difficult, and we came to a simple but profound conclusion: We’re just too busy to be present in the moment. And so last year, our spiritual focus was The Time is Now: Our Urgent Need for Sabbath. We proclaimed our need to slow down and rest, and we practiced being more present in the moment.
In the year ahead, we’ll keep practicing presence, but in a new way. This year we ask: Where are we? We’ll take a deep dive into the importance of place–of being fully present wherever we find ourselves. We’ll begin with the history of this place before we think about what it means to belong in this place. We’ll ask where we find God here and how we relate to others who share this place with us. Our hypothesis is that if we can learn to become more fully present here, then we will find belonging, purpose, and a deep joy that no one can take away from us.

As we go out into the community this summer, we want our neighbors to see Fairmount. We want our neighbors to know that Fairmount is a church that cares about them; a church that shows up and that participates in the life of our community. And so we’ve designed a brand new Fairmount t-shirt! You can buy your own Fairmount t-shirt (or sweatshirt) here. We encourage you to get a t-shirt and wear it proudly as we venture out into our community this summer! Click here to visit the Fairmount shop!
